Virgin Base Oil

What is virgin base oil?

Base oils are generally divided into two types: mineral and synthetic. Virgin base oils, which are used to produce various specialized lubricants, are referred to as mineral base oils obtained through crude oil refining. This oil is highly valued due to its unique properties, including high purity levels and low impurity content.

Approximately 1 to 2 percent of a barrel of crude oil is used to produce base oil through the refining process. The remaining portion of the crude oil barrel is utilized for producing gasoline, diesel, kerosene, coke, asphalt, and other hydrocarbons.

Types of Virgin Base Oils

Virgin base oils are produced in various types, with the most common groups being Group I, Group II, Group III, and Group IV. Group I has the lowest level of refining, while Group IV is the most highly refined. Each grade has its own unique properties and is used in different applications.

The process of base oil production

During the heating process, light and heavy hydrocarbons are separated, and the light fuels are refined and distilled to produce gasoline and other fuels, while the heavy fuels are refined to produce asphalt and base oil.

The final sample of base oil undergoes a special hydroprocessing method where sulfur and aromatic compounds are removed through high-pressure hydrogenation.

To produce various lubricating oils for automotive and light and heavy industrial applications, approximately 20 different chemical additives are added to virgin base oil to improve its quality in terms of friction control, preventing wear and tear in engines, and lubrication of industrial and agricultural machinery.

Various Applications of Different Types of Virgin Base Oils

  • Group I base oils are commonly used in the production of industrial lubricants such as metalworking fluids and rust preventives.

  • Group II base oils are used in the production of engine oils, hydraulic fluids, and transmission fluids.

  • Group III base oils are employed in the production of high-performance engine oils and synthetic lubricants.

  • Group IV base oils are utilized in the production of advanced synthetic lubricants.

Production of Virgin Base Oil

Virgin base oils are produced using several different processes. The most common processes include solvent extraction, hydroprocessing, and hydrocracking.

Factors Affecting the Price of Virgin Base Oil

  • Crude oil prices
  • Oil cutting prices
  • Packaging type
  • Transportation method
  • Seasonal and market demand
  • International political and economic events

The most significant cost factor is transportation expenses. Undoubtedly, Arta Oil products in the Middle East region will have the ability to compete in terms of quality and price.

Quality and Technical Inspection of Virgin Base Oil

The quality of virgin base oil depends on the production process and the quality of its raw materials. Arta Oil’s virgin base oil has the least odor and the highest color stability, indicating its high quality. All our products can be inspected during initial loading and at the destination.

Transportation and Storage of Virgin Base Oil

Transportation and storage are essential factors in preserving the quality of virgin base oil. The base oil should be packaged and transported in a way that prevents contamination, degradation, and exposure to air and moisture.

Additionally, product specifications and safety data sheets should be made available to the transportation company. The transport vehicle itself should be clean and free from any contamination from previous cargoes that could potentially contaminate the product.
